Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation; [se’lena kinta’nija ‘peres] April 16, 1971 - March 31 1995) was an American Tejano singer. Called"the "Queen of Tejano music", her contributions to music and fashion led her to be one of the most well-known Mexican-American entertainers in the latter half of the 20th century. In the year 2020, Billboard magazine put her in the third spot on their list of "Greatest Latino artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums as well as the Latin songs chart. Her style of dress earned her the title "Tejano Madonna". Her clothes choices also makes her one of the most prominent Latin artists. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla. In the 80s, she frequently accused of singing Tejano music that was a predominantly male-dominated genre. She was also refused performances in Texas venues. But her popularity increased following her win of the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987, which she won repeatedly. The singer was signed to EMI Latin in 1989. The album, titled self-titled, was released the following year. Her brother became her principal music producer and writer. Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) was a top album, reaching number 1 on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums Chart for eight consecutive months. Its commercial success was praised by music critics as making it the "breakthrough" recording of her musical career. One of the singles, "Como la Flor", was a hit and was her most-loved song. Live! (1993) won the award for Best Mexican/American Album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first female Tejano artist to receive this honor. Amor Prohibido became one the most sought-after Latin albums in the United States in 1994. It was critically acclaimed as the first Tejano music album that was commercially viable, and it quickly became one the most well-known Latin subgenres of Latin music at the time.
